Autobahn No-Speed-Limit Map

An interactive map of the whole German autobahn network, coloured section by section: where there is no speed limit, where overhead gantries decide, and where a fixed limit or roadworks apply.

On 64.7% of the autobahn carriageway (17,287 km) there is no speed limit. The map shows every one of those sections in colour – live and zoomable.

What the map shows

The map colours every autobahn in Germany by the speed limit that actually applies on each section. Instead of a single national figure, you see the real picture: long free stretches in the north and east, dense fixed limits around the big cities, and gantry-controlled corridors where the limit changes with traffic. You can zoom to any route, follow it from junction to junction, and read where the free sections begin and end.

The colour legend

Each section falls into one of four categories. Together they cover the full 26,705 km of directional carriageway:

How the German autobahn network breaks down by speed limit – the four categories shown on the map.
Category Length Share
No speed limit17,287 km64.7 %
Fixed limit6,196 km23.2 %
Dynamic (gantries)2,826 km10.6 %
No data396 km1.5 %

Add the free and dynamic sections together and 75.3% of the network is not permanently limited. On the free sections the recommended speed of 130 km/h applies as advice, not as a ban.

How to read it

Open the map and zoom to the region you care about. Follow an autobahn along its route: the colour tells you, metre by metre, whether you may drive freely, whether a fixed sign applies, or whether an overhead gantry is in control. The same map also shows current roadworks from Autobahn GmbH, so you can see where the free stretch you were counting on is temporarily capped.

Where the free sections are

No-limit stretches are not spread evenly. They dominate the flatter, less densely populated north and east, while the limits cluster around conurbations and mountain routes. The longest continuously unrestricted stretch runs on the A31 in the north-west: about 188 km in one go. For the full breakdown see where there is no speed limit and the freest autobahns.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a map showing where the autobahn has no speed limit?

Yes. The interactive map on this site colours every autobahn section by its speed limit, so the 64.7% of the network with no limit is shown directly. Open the map.

How much of the autobahn has no speed limit?

About 17,287 km, or 64.7% of the directional carriageway. Including dynamically controlled sections, 75.3% is not permanently limited.

What do the colours mean?

Each section is one of four categories: no speed limit, a fixed limit, a dynamic limit set by overhead gantries, or no reliable data. Current roadworks are shown on top.

Where is the data from?

The road network and speed limits come from OpenStreetMap, analysed for autobahn-tempolimit.de. Roadworks come from Autobahn GmbH des Bundes.
