Not every Autobahn is equally free. Some routes are more than 90% without a speed limit – here is the ranking, sorted by the share of unrestricted driving.

The evaluation covers all Autobahns of at least 200 kilometres, sorted by the share of the route without a speed limit (directional-carriageway kilometres):

Why the north and east lead
The geography of the ranking stands out: almost all the front-runners lie in the north and east. The A20 runs through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein, the A19 and A24 connect the Baltic coast with Berlin and Hamburg, and the A14 crosses Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
The reason is population density: where there are fewer people and less traffic, there is less cause for fixed limits on noise or safety grounds. In the densely populated conurbations along the Rhine and Ruhr, the unrestricted share is the smallest. Anyone deliberately looking for open road will find it away from the big metropolitan areas – clearly visible on the interactive map.

How the figures are produced
The basis is our own analysis of the freely available OpenStreetMap data. For each Autobahn segment we check whether a speed limit is recorded, and sum the length by category. We count directional-carriageway kilometres: each direction of travel is counted separately, because it can be regulated differently. That is why the A20, at 690 km in this count, is longer than its plain route length. This is a data-based analysis, not an official survey.

Is there an Autobahn entirely without a speed limit?
No, none is fully unrestricted. Even the A20, the front-runner, has restricted sections at interchanges, junctions and in roadworks.
Why are the free stretches mainly in the north and east?
Because there is less traffic and lower population density there. Fixed limits are usually imposed for noise-protection and safety reasons in busy regions – and those are rarer in the north-east.
